Was Major Hasan Under Stress or was it More Sinsiter?
Major Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 29 at Fort Hood, Texas on November 5, 2009. Was he under terrible stress or did he harbor something more sinister in his mind? Hasan attended the Dar Al Hirjah Mosque, although not every day according to those in charge. At that time, some of the 9/11 hijackers would also attend though not necessarily on the same days. Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical, stated that Hasan "is a hero" and also had connections with the Dar Al Hirjah Mosque at the same time Major Hasan attended.
Major Hasan, an army psychiatrist, was first assigned to Walter Reed Medical Center and was recently transferred to Fort Hood, Texas. He was born in Virginia and attended Virginia Tech University. His medical schooling was paid for by the United States Military. While at Walter Reed, Hasan received a "poor performance evaluation" according to the Associated Press. If Hasan was doing so poorly, why wasn't he scrutinized more closely? Why was he transferred to another facility? Major Hasan was promoted from Captain to Major in May 2009. Why was he promoted?
Six months prior to the attacks at Fort Hood, officials were aware of internet postings in which Major Hasan praised suicide bombers. Government investigators have located emails from Hasan to Al Qaeda. Neighbors of Hasan reported seeing him handing out copies of the Koran. Dr. Val Finnell, a former colleague of Major Hasan, stated, "He was a Muslim first and an American second." Why was a major in the United States Army "praising" suicide bombers?
Major Hasan was recently taken off the ventilator; he is now awake and talking to the medical staff. On Sunday, November 8, 2009, three days after the attacks, officials tried to ask Major Hasan some questions, but he did not answer and asked for a lawyer. Major Hasan will not be tried in a civilian court, but rather will be tried by the United States Military, as well he should be.
