Why should Paris Hilton go to jail? In recent years, the rich, famous, and politically powerful have not had to suffer the indignity of punishment for breaking the law. A United States President can lie to a Grand Jury and not go to jail. A politician can steal irreplaceable documents from the National Archives and not go to jail. Why should Paris Hilton go to jail?

Why not just levy a fine against Paris Hilton every time she breaks the law? Shouldn't fines be enough? Perhaps not. Is there a fine large enough that Paris would suffer some when she had to pay it? A fine is usually designed to cause just enough suffering so it will serve as a deterrent to breaking that law again. A fine should deter Paris and act as a warning to others that if you break that same law you will suffer in a similar manner. A fine can serve as a deterrent to more than one person. How high would the fine need to be to act as a deterrent to Paris Hilton? Is there a fine so large for her offenses that she or her parents would suffer some when paying it? Probably not. A fine for Paris Hilton would not accomplish what fines are designed to achieve. A fine might even be laughable for Paris and encourage her to think she can keep on breaking the law with impunity (for the fines would probably be insignificant to her).

Why not put Paris under probation each time she breaks the law or require her to undergo counseling. Then, if she breaks the law again, she would suffer the consequences of the court warning her once again to not break the law or suffer worse consequences. Putting some people on probation is a sufficient deterrent to breaking the law again. The courts tried probation with Paris Hilton, but probation did not serve as a deterrent to her future law breaking.

If fines and probation would not work to help Paris Hilton learn to obey the law, then it appears spending time in jail is the only hopeful deterrent for her. At least for the time she is living in jail others will be safe from possible injury or death due to her driving. Perhaps spending time in jail will serve as the deterrent to future law breaking, where nothing else would work or has worked in the past with her.

Takeaways
  • Do you think Paris Hilton is being treated unfairly by the courts?
  • What punishment, if any, would help Paris Hilton?
  • Do you think our court system treats offenders impartially?
Did You Know?
If you were the judge, what sentences would you impose on Paris Hilton each time she came before you in court? Leave your comments for others to read.

I agree. Consequences, properly matched to the nature of the offense, do in fact 'tutor' the soul. Maybe not the first time, but as repeated offenses bring appropriate sanctions even the very slow come around. An old saying I have heard has bearing on the subject: "Even a dumb dog won't kiss a hot stove twice!" A word to the wise . . .

she is a product of her surroundings, It is not her fault she was born into a rich family, she knows no other life, I know I will be hated for feeling like this, but she is used to what she is used to. I am by no means rich, work 2 jobs. just like we are used to what we are used to, she was confined to her house, which is her life style, and so others are confined to their houses, which are their life styles, Where I live, people are doing a lot worse and getting away with it... give me a break. can't even walk around my neighborhood after dark, gangs around, and paris is in Jail, what is wrong with this picture....

SHHH! Stop feeding the the Paris Hilton frenzy. What contribution has this shallow shell contributed to our society? Why do you waste your time? We all know our justice system is flawed. ZZZZZZZZZZ

A fine would do nothing to teach her what she did was wrong. First of all, if it was a large sum, her parents would pay it for her, so no lesson learned. Secondly, she is very wealthy so it would be hard to hurt her with a financial penalty in the first place. Look at corporations who pollute the planet. If you fine them 5000$ a day, and they make 2 million a day, it's easier for them to pay the fine then redesign their systems to lower pollutants.

she should go to jail because even if she is rich and she shouldn't get to pay her way out of every thing that dosn't go the way she planed it. you the crime you have to do the time that the saying and she did the crime now she has to do the time. she should have to spend 5 mouths in jail at least paris hilton GO TO JAIL (and I mean it) it her fault get it got it. (she better go too jail and now) before she hurt some one and if she keeps doiing the crime then life in jail get it got it okay okay.

Who cares about Paris Hilton? She's a spoiled, overly-indulgent young woman who needs a wake-up call. She got it. Whatever. Article itself? Yawn.

It is a well written and well thought out article as others before me have posted. I believe she should go to jail whether it changes her or not. Our laws, even though many spurn the idea today, were/are based on the biblical Judeo-Christian heritage our country was founded upon. Maybe this sentence and others like it, if carried out in proper manner, could help us return to a justice system that is honorable and wise.

The intent of a fine, prison, probation, whatever, is to affect the future behaviour of ghe person affected. It's obvious that with "Poor Paris" getting all the notoriety from the press and fans, and abeted by her family, she is only encouraged to continue her sinful lifestyle. She probably will not change her ways even with this jail term, and I doubt that the public will change. Do you suppose that a life spent "on probation" will change her? Maybe another period in rehab...
