How to Help Out During the Holidays in the Alfred Area

2
I recently spent around 6 months volunteering at a local homeless shelter, which helps many families in the area in a variety of ways. Here are a few examples of how you can help this organization this holiday season.

At the York County Shelter Program, located on Shaker Hill Rd. in alfred, they help low income families in a variety of ways, including ofrfering a soup kitchen, which gives free lunch every day, as well as giving free food boxes to families which you can pick up daily. They survive on donations and volunteers, here are a few ways you can help them help others.

1. Donate food

Things like canned food, boxed pasta, and generally any type of shelf food they can use to distribute in their food boxes. For a familty they tend to give 1-2 full meals, as well as snacks if they can. Jarred baby food as well as formula can also be very helpful. Dog and cat food in small packages are good to donate as well. Food for Thanksgiving can be helpful as well.

2. Donate time

Volunteers can help out in many ways, the shelter runs a bakery where volunteers can help by running the register and watching the front, as well as cleaning, organizing and stocking. Drivers can help transport food to their off site soup kitchens. You can also volunteer at their soup kitchen by serving food and cleaning after meals.

3. Donate money

This one may be a little harder due to the economy, but by donating money you can help the shelter survive, they can buy odds and ends that normally aren"t donated, as well as pay for things that they need to keep the shelter running.

4. Check their website for what they may need.

Currently you can donate items such as fans for the bakery, as well as furniture such as lamps, cabinets for food, brooms, mops, pails, and phones. They keep a list in their website where you can look to see if there is anything you can donate to help them out.
