Each day, couples all across the United States engage in discussions, debates and even arguments over the finances of their relationship. For many couples, finding a way to balance finances into a loving relationship can be one of the greatest challenges they will face.

Often, when faced with financial strain or uncertainty, couples who are married or co-habitating will consider alternative methods in which to handle family finances often using these methods as a way to keep peace in the relationship and even provide a change in focus away from financial issues.

One such common practice among couples involves the maintenance of separate finances, including separate checking accounts. For many individuals, maintaining separate finances offers a solution to offset the potential financial disasters associated with one individual spending in excess.

So, when is it best to discuss financial arrangements? Most experts agree financial discussions should occur during periods when complications and issues involving finances are not at the forefront of discussion. In other words, select times that are pleasant and peaceful in the home as this provides for a more open and receptive conversation.

Complications in separating finances may arise especially when one individual earns more money than another. This is especially true if the individual who suffers from overspending is the lower wage earner. Often, even when separating finances, it is important to for the higher wage earner to offer a supplemental income to the lower wage earner.

Maintaining separate finances will assist each individual in a relationship to feel more independent and free to make decisions that may be necessary for their own well being. For example, if one individual in the relationship feels visiting a spa or seeking out mental health services is important, having their own spending account will give them the freedom to seek out these services without discussing the need with the other individual in the relationship.
