During the summer months, many teenagers will venture out into the job market in hopes of landing the perfect summer job. For many, providing babysitting or nanny services is a great opportunity to earn extra cash in the summer and assist parents with providing summer child care while they work. When considering a summer job as a babysitter, there are some key areas of focus that should be addressed prior to assuming the responsibilities and duties of a childcare provider. As a child care provider, offering babysitting services in the summer, you will be joining the parents and working as part of a team to provide care for their children while they are away at work.
First, when considering a babysitting position for a family, it is important to not only understand their customs and culture but to also respect it. In fact, if you find that you are caring for children with a rich heritage and culture, consider researching that culture so that you can offer some educational information to the children during the day. This, however, does not mean that you can enter into a realm of discussion involving religion.
In addition to offering cultural and diversity support to a family, also remember that parents who have worked all day would most appreciate coming home to a clean house and clean children. Because parents are exhausted at the end of a work day, they are least interested in cleaning their children and their house. For this reason, when providing in-home child care, be sure the home is neat and tidy before the parents arrive and make sure the children are clean and prepared for their parents.
Before beginning your first day on the job, be sure to meet with the parents and outline the rules of the home. Because small children find great difficulty in understanding rapidly and frequently changing rules, it is important to maintain consistency in the home when the parents are away at work. Be sure these discussions include issues involving discipline and temperament of the children as you will want to be consistent in the discipline approach the parents are presently using.
