Lakeshore State Park
Recently the state of Wisconsin built a new park on the Milwaukee lakefront across from the summer fest grounds. As parks go it's not very big. Yet for Milwaukee it makes the lakefront more scenic and usable. Before the change not much on this part of the lakefront was developed. There was one rough path through weeds on the peninsula jutting from summer fest grounds, which was only accessible from the south end. Now there is bridge across the inlet and concrete paths to walk on, that are marked by small lights after dark. There is also a fishing pier and boat slips. The shoreline now has limestone rocks every where, except a few places that have flat brown stones which make for an easy place to sit or fish. One can walk along both side of the lagoon as there is a path opened up through the summer fest grounds.
The prairie grass has grown up some but weeds are still present. The wild flowers with their purple, yellow, and white colors were good this summer and fall, but now are fading away. A few yellow flowers and small purple asters are doting the landscape. Plenty of Canada geese are present as well as gulls, mallards and coots. I have seen a mink too, very early in the morning. It was running on the rocks by shore, and then it disappeared into them. Maybe it made it home.
The joggers, walkers and bikers usually start just before sunrise and stop after sunset, but those of us who are fishing are their all the time. I have caught Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Bass and Northern Pike, all from shore. The 6lbs or 7lbs Rainbow Trout i caught in some was more fun than the others, because I was using my light pole with only 8 lbs line on a Mitchell 300 reel. It took about 20 minutes to land it. That day I forgot the landing net. The 35" Pike was the biggest, but I was using a large pole with twenty-pound line so the battle did not take as long. Forgot the landing net that day too.
Lakeshore Park is a great place to watch a sunrise or sunset. It is a nice addition to Milwaukee.
