Larger playgroups and mothers groups always have things on their calendar from playgroups to mom's night out, but developing new ideas can be one of the toughest jobs. Many groups get into a rut of going to each other's homes for playgroups and out to dinner for their mom's night out. Of course, this can be fun, but it's also always nice to mix things up to keep your members excited. For kids instead of just playgroups try park playdates, group outings, and educational field trips.

Meeting at a local park, indoor playarea, restaurant with play area, bowling alley, putt-putt course, zoo, children's museum, or other local fun spot is perfect. Just make sure the location is age appropriate. Don't attempt to take one year olds bowling, though older one year olds may have a blast doing duck-pin bowling or mini bowling. Look in the newspaper or online for local events. Nearby bookstores and libraries may offer story time, parks may have festivals or events going on, or there may be an kids-eat-free special at a local restaurant.

An event that is always a big hit are field trips, because they are fun and educational. Local government places like the fire station and police station will host a group of children for free, but it is always nice to bring food as a thank you. Go berry, apple, or pumpkin picking at a local orchard, visit a haunted house, or stop to see Santa. Many local farms will host a group of children for a day, so take a picnic and watch the cows get milked. Other fun locations include ice cream parlors, post office, grocery store, and pet stores. Many of these places love to host field trips and will give discounts on items like ice cream for large groups.

Takeaways
  • Many playgroups and mom's groups get stuck in a rut.
  • The local paper is a great place to find wonderful family activites for yourself or your group.
  • Many local businesses love hosting field trips.
