With hefty increases at the gas pumps, many drivers are scrambling to find ways to increase the gas mileage of their vehicle. While rushing out to buy a hybrid is not the answer for everyone, their are simple steps that can be taken to increase the fuel efficiency of your current vehicle.

One of the first things that I recommend drivers do is to have their tire pressure checked. By checking your tire pressure regularly, you can reduce the amount of wear and tear on your tires as well as increase your fuel efficiency. When tire pressure is low, the vehicle must exert more energy. Under inflated tires cause more friction between the tire and the road thus using more gas. Not only do under inflated tires wear faster, they decrease gas mileage by up to 2-3 miles per gallon. Check your tire pressure and save money on tires as well as at the gas pump.

Checking your tire pressure is quick and easy. By picking up a tire gage (either manual or digital) you can quickly find out what your tire pressure is. The correct tire pressure for your vehicle should be listed on the door of your car. If your tire pressure is low, make certain to check it again while filling them at a local gas station. It is important to have the correct tire pressure as over filling the tires is just as bad as having a low tire pressure.

Another easy way to increase your gas mileage is to have your air filter replaced. The next time you are in for an oil change, ask the mechanic to replace your air filter. Inquire to find out what kind of air filter is best for your vehicle. The paper filters of yesteryear are not the best option when trying to increase your fuel efficiency. Opt instead for a foam or cotton filter. With the foam or cotton filter, air flow is increased to the engine resulting in a higher oxygen content and a reduction in fuel consumption.

If your car is not due to be in the garage for a while, most air filters are easy to access and can be changed by even the most hesitant car owner. Check your cars manual to see where the air filter is located. It may be as easy as stopping by your local auto supply store and replacing the filter yourself for instant boost in gas mileage.

Takeaways
  • A new air filter can increase your gas mileage by 10%.
  • By keeping your tires properly inflated, you can save on gas as well as tires.
  • Increasing your cars gas mileage can be as easy as keeping a regular maintenance schedule.
