Science Diet vrs. Purina ONE

I have to confess, I did what most dog owners do. I found my dog then figured out what kind of dry dog food I was going to feed him. I'd walked past the rows of endless brands of dry dog food without ever considering what I was getting myself into. It never crossed my mind that feeding a dog a nutritionally healthy diet would be so difficult or take so much to learn.

So the first time I went out for dry dog food I never even considered reading the ingredients or wondering what the label really meant. I looked for a brand with a big name, one I'd seen often enough to make me feel comfortable that they knew the dry dog food business. Science Diet was the label I went for. I figured it sounded good, a 'scientific diet' right? Well it takes a certain science to know how to save a few bucks on using the leftovers of lambs, chicken, turkeys, as well as skipping the meat products all together to fill your dog with 'plant proteins' provided by corn, or is that what we learned in math class?

Now don't get me wrong Science Diet has done a lot right as well as cutting a couple of corners. Science Diet Chicken & Rice recipe, Science Diet Beef & Rice Recipe rate up there on the good end of the dry dog food scale, just lean to the way of caution with the others that they offer, better yet, turn the bag over and take a look at the ingredients label. Does it start with lamb, chicken, beef or turkey, or does it start with corn, chicken by products or lamb meal? As far as preservatives go, Science Diet does lean more to the natural side of the measuring stick, using Tocopherols(vitamin E) and Citric Acid instead of the artificial kind.

Purina One is the other brand another large name brand that ranks up there with Science Diet. They are just as guilty of cutting a couple of corners when it comes to, Purina One Chicken and Rice Formula as well as Purina One Natural Blends. They do however rank up there with Purina One Beef and Rice Formula as well as Purina One Lamb and Rice Formula. They also use natural preservatives instead of artificial.

im going to have to dissagree. ALL of their formulas are bad. not just some. purina one and science diet are over priced crap. and im not positive about this but im pretty sure that the reason dogs "get fat" with chicken formulas is becuase chicken is cheaper and so they can afford to put more of it in it. with the beef and lamb they cant put as much in each batch and so the dog isnt getting the same amount of meat.
