George W. Bush Cautions Against Big Government

Former President George W. Bush unveiled plans for a Presidential library and policy think tank at Southern Methodist University in Dallas on Thursday. While so doing, George W. Bush had some things to say about public policy and his legacy.

Former President George W. Bush also had a warning, though he did not name names.

"The role of government is not to create wealth but to create the conditions that allow entrepreneurs and innovators to thrive.

"As the world recovers, we will face a temptation to replace the risk-and-reward model of the private sector with the blunt instruments of government spending and control. History shows that the greater threat to prosperity is not too little government involvement, but too much."

That warning should find resonance with the increasingly large amount of people who find the policies of the current administration disquieting. The speech George W. Bush made, with the rare public comment on public policy, may also be the first move in a campaign to win back his legacy.

George W. Bush left office with poor approval ratings, with the legacy of the War in Iraq and a bad economy. But as the War in Iraq winds down successfully, as President Obama continues to dither over what to do about Afghanistan, and as the economic crisis grinds on despite hundreds of billions of dollars in "stimulus" spending, some people are already taking a second look at the Presidency of George W. Bush and are finding themselves nostalgic. Indeed, it can be said that people are starting to miss George W. Bush.

The latest to express the wistfulness for the Bush years comes in the form of a post at a pro Hillary Clinton Blog.

"Well, we told you before how much the current president, Dr. Utopia, made us realize just how wrong we were about Bush. We shudder to think what Dr. Utopia would have done post-9/11. He would have not gone there with a bullhorn and struck that right tone. More likely than not, he would have been his usual fey, apologetic self and waxed professorially about how evil America is and how justified Muslims are for attacking us, with a sidebar on how good the attacks were because they would humble us.
