The Horned Frogs of TCU have faced a week unlike any other. The Horned Frogs have been powerful before, but not in this modern era. Now the TCU Horned Frogs are at the center of the
college football universe tonight, as they continue to threaten the established BCS order. Can Horned Frog Nation actually get to Pasadena and the BCS championship? The odds are still very long, even if TCU beats Utah tonight and goes unbeaten. But if the Horned Frogs win, they can strike a big blow for the mid-major cause.
As of now, the TCU Horned Frogs are the best team in the country, aside from the Big Three of Florida, Alabama and Texas. This sort of thing hasn't been done by a mid-major in 25 years, since BYU won it all in 1984. Mid-majors have gotten to the BCS before, but never gotten as high up as TCU has thus far.
The Horned Frogs still need a lot of help, and it still looks very unlikely that Florida, Alabama and Texas will lose before December. But if one of those teams actually fall, TCU is the team next in line for the national championship game. Yet that can all go away if the Horned Frogs come up short against Utah at home.
The Utah Utes were last year's mid-major icon, after going unbeaten and taking care of Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. The Horned Frogs have gotten even closer to the top this year, as they are number 4 in the BCS, and can improve their computer rankings by beating Utah, who is No. 16.
Though the Utes have lost once this year to Oregon, they still may be the next best mid-major team in the nation, which helps TCU's BCS case tonight. The Horned Frogs' status has been lifted this season by beating teams like Virginia, Clemson and BYU. Defeating Utah wouldn't get them past the Big Three, but if one of them fell, TCU would have the resume to make a real case for Pasadena - unlike Boise State and so many mid-majors in the past.
Horned Frog fever has taken hold in Fort Worth, as the ESPN Gameday crew did their show on campus, and TCU is debuting Nike's new Pro Combat jerseys for the game. This is the biggest stage in decades for the TCU program, though it will make the fall even harder if the Utes win.
