Organizing Time as Adult Students
So you want to finish your degree? Perhaps you want to get that degree that you missed while being busy with real life commitments? It is important to organize your time whether you are an adult or non-adult student. It is a particular challenge for adults because of career, family and other responsibilities that coincide with education.Below are some tips to help you organize your time:
TIP #1 - Buy a planner. It is good to have a planner in the current year. You can write down appointments, class schedules, work deadlines, family events and homework schedules. With everything in one place, you will not have to keep up with several calendars or little sticky notes.
TIP #2 - Buy a handheld PDA. You can take class notes, work notes and keep schedules all in one place. This is a terrific way to stay organized if your budget will fit it.
TIP #3 - Daily lists of tasks to complete are very important for time organization. In the mornings, make a list of things to do for the day. This should include time to read for class, meeting work requirements and doing regular activities and responsibilities. For example, you can put on the list take out trash, study chemistry and so on.
After you make the daily list, prioritize it. Number the list with 1 being the most important thing to do. As you complete the list mark it off.
Making lists should take about ten minutes of your time. However, it will help you stay much more organized during the day.
TIP #4 - Always allow some study time each day. If nothing else you will want to review over the chapter summaries in the text books or read over your class notes that you took. It is important to look at your class material daily. You will learn it better and faster.
TIP #5 - Delegate tasks. Give some of the housework, errand running and other responsibilities to members of your family or household. You need the extra time to study. At work, give duties that you can to other co-workers so that you can meet deadlines faster. You might even be able to squeeze in a few minutes here and there of study time while working.
