What's the secret to living a long life? Is there a magic pill you can take to live a long time? What really makes a difference in your longevity? There are several things that can help you to live a longer life. Here is a list of some of them. Note I said SOME of them. There are many, many more.

WATER: Yes, water is essential to living a long life. You need around 64 ounces of water a day. Your body gets dehydrated without enough water. Dehydration leads to memory loss, irritability and worn out kidneys. The kidneys have to take care of the wastes. If you don't drink enough water then waste sits in the kidneys and builds up nasty bacteria. Next thing you know you have kidney stones and kidney infections. Both of which are very, very unpleasant.

REST OR SLEEP: Your body was designed to rest or sleep a minimum of eight to nine hours a night. You are also set up to rest at least thirty minutes to an hour in the middle of the day. Think about it. Technology is why we stay up late watching television and then get up early for work. Our ancestors were asleep when the sun set. We rested in the heat of the day instead of hunting and gathering. Technology changed but our basic body make up is still the same. Our ancestors needed rest. Our bodies today need rest. Not getting enough rest actually decreases the amount of time that you will live.

WEIGHT: Your weight affects how long you will live. If you are carrying around a lot of fat it is tough on your body. Just think of it like a car. If you haul around lots of weight you burn more gas; put wear on the tires and strain the engine. Our bodies are similar to the car. If you carry around a lot of nasty fat, it will shorten your life.

TOUCH: Touch is one of the most powerful forms of bonding. Studies have shown that animal therapy works well with people because they need touch. You can pet most of the animals you keep around. Couples tend to live longer then singles do. Why? Couples get to touch each other even if it's just holding hands.

Takeaways
  • Drink water and get rest.

Can we shoot for 5 out of 10? I try to do all of these things, but at 50 years old - I forget: heehee. Nice article, Joyce.
