Eukanuba Canned Dog Food Versus Newman's Own Organics: The Winner Is?

CSO

Hanna, our 3-year old Pomeranian eats dry dog food. However we learned when she was a puppy that she loved Eukanuba wet food. We started with the Canned Puppy Growth and she grew into Eukanuba Adult Maintenance canned food. However this was used only as a treat!
Fast forward a couple of years. We eat organic food as much as possible so why shouldn't Hanna. We've been alternating Eukanuba canned food with Newman's Own Organics. Both these canned foods are given her as a reward and treat. Let's see which she likes and which truly may be the better choice.

Eukanuba Adult Maintenance is designed for adult active dogs. Eukanuba is an IAMS Company product. The company claims "to have all the nutritional science for which Eukanuba Dog Foods are known." www.eukanuba.com. We tripled check and this product does not have any tainted wheat gluten in it as I wrote in my article http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/181809/dog_and_cat_food_recalled_by_menu_foods.html.

In spite of it having chicken-by-products it seems better than supermarket brands. Eukanuba is sold in specialty stores. I buy Newman's own at Whole Foods. Newman's Own Organics tells us "Poultry by-product meal is defined as meat that is derived from ground necks, feet and intestines. Most often it is from 4D chickens. Newman's Own Organics does not use any poultry by-product meal in any of their dog or cat foods." http://www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/faqs/

Eukanuba comes in a 10-ounce can in the $1.19 price range. It has a pop-top lid and a resealable plastic lid. Newman's Own canned food comes in 11.1 ounce cans which are much easier to find than the ones we buy. We buy the 5.5 ounce cans which run about $1.29. It also has a pop top lid but it doesn't have a plastic lid (Less to clutter landfills for those who don't recycle. Though if you are buying this I imagine you do recycle!)

Eukanuba is a soft, chopped, not terrible smelling product. They call it pate (chopped/ground). I was really surprised that Newman's Own didn't smell very good.

we have a diabetic cat. he has been receiving insulin shots twice a day for the last 4 years. about 3 years ago i became ill and traditional medicine just wasn't cutting it - so i sought alternatives - ended up eating better, 85 - 90 % of my diet is now organic and my illness went away and has been gone for over 2 years now. recently the wife and i were talking about how our life style changes have effected our health in such a positive manner and the conversation drifted toward the cats health which got me started in researching his illness. we soon made a decision to change his diet from dry cat food to newmans organic canned food - after 10 days of the new diet and insulin shots the cat crashed one morning - we took him to the vet and they put him on an i.v. and slowly gave him so glucose throughout the day. we were told then that changing his diet was a bad idea - that no matter what we do the cat will always be diabetic. we continued because the way we saw things was he crashe
