It seems that the origin of the idea to have a day each year to honor the American flag by celebrating "Flag Day" began in 1855. A school teacher named B.J. Cigrand wanted students to think of June 14th as the American flag's birthday. This day was selected because at that time it was the 108th anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes. After almost 100 years of efforts to institute a national day to honor the American flag, on August 3rd, 1949, President Truman designated that June 14th would be National Flag Day when he signed an Act of Congress to this effect. Many Americans honor the flag on a daily basis by raising it on a flag pole in their yard and at their place of work but, many more Americans make a special effort to show the flag and their respect for our country on Flag Day. Below are a few ideas you might want to consider to show your American spirit on Flag Day this year.
Decorating Your Front Yard
Buy some of those cheap plastic tables cloths at a Dollar Tree of Deals in red, white and blue. Cut these into sections, that will fit your needs, and drape them on the edge of your roof, at the top of a fence, or hang them from tree branches. This will give your yard a festive and truly patriotic look for the holiday.
Buy American flags that have a stick or metal rod on them at a craft store or again, a Dollar Tree or Deals store and stick them into the ground around your front yard drive way, along the curb in front of your house, or in the flower beds. These flags come in various sizes so you might want to buy a variety of sizes and alternate them for a different affect.
Make your front door into a flag by covering it with red and white striped wrapping paper. If you can't find any, take a piece of butcher paper, cut to the size of your door, and paint red strips on it. Add the blue field of white stars. Also this might be available in wrapping paper but you can make it out of butcher paper too and affix it to the red and white butcher paper you have already affixed to the door.
