Top 10 Romantic Comedies for Those Over 50
Those of you who follow my work know that I love movies. I love all movies, even some that the critics panned. I appreciate the art form wholeheartedly. There isn't a film genre I don't like and there are few actors I don't appreciate.
Therefore, choosing the Top 10 Comedy Movies for Those Over 50 was no easy task. I could have easily listed 25, 50, or even 100 of my favorites. Nonetheless, I stuck to the challenge. Here are my favorite comedy movies.
#10 - "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"
This one was actually a toss-up. I could have just as easily chosen "How to Marry a Millionaire." I love both Marilyn Monroe films. However, I chose this movie because it is easily one of the actress's finest comedic performances.
A nice side benefit, is the revelation that Jane Russell could also be funny. Who would have thunk it? Her turn imitating Loralei (Monroe's character) in court is absolutely spot on.
#9 - "Airplane"
Okay, it was a bit crass at times, but it is hard to watch this film without admiring the writers' flair for double entendres. It was inspired. Additionally, who knew that the movie's many traditionally dramatic performers could be so funny?
Slapstick comedy at its best, "Airplane" began a long line of spoofs on classic films. Additionally, it re-energized the careers of some of Hollywood's old timers. What more can you ask?
#8 - "A Fish Called Wanda"
It is hard to know where to begin with this one. It is easily one of Kevin Kline's best comedic performances but Jamie Curtis was also hilarious.
This film was a mixture of great writing, excellent direction and even better acting. I challenge anyone to watch it without laughing from beginning to end.
#7 - "Young Frankenstein"
Another spoof on a classic film, "Young Frankenstein" was one in a long line of amazing Mel Brooks films. The cast was amazing with Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, and Cloris Leachman.
Brooks's monster was hard to dislike. He had heart, soul, and rhythm. Boyles's scenes with Kahn were gut wrenchingly funny. Leachman was never funnier and Wilder was his usual comedic genius self.
# 6 - "Trading Places"
