I'll have to admit that when it comes to eating out for me, I prefer "name" restaurants. Family owned restaurants, at least the majority that I've been to, seem to be low on quality while trying to pave it over with a smile. The problem may stem from the fact that I choose restaurants based on where I'm at when I'm hungry, hardly a keen diner. I have a friend that I usually dine out with because he is much better at picking a restaurant than I am. One of the many gems he has introduced me to over the years.

Location:
Yianni's Greek Restaurant is in a terrific location. While it is located in Downtown Fort Pierce, Florida, Yianni's is positioned behind city hall in a shopping location that has good security. The building has a typical main street look to it, but is very appealing to my eye. The area is also well landscaped and while you're eating in Yianni's front room, you can have a great view of the area.

Service:
Family owned restaurants are BIG on service. They have to be, because they're business is one hundred percent word-of-mouth. Yianni's is of course no different. The owner comes from Greece and comes around to the tables to check on the each customer's satisfaction and will even bring food to the table sometimes. The hostesses are always courteous and have no problems making small talk. Orders are taken quickly and refills for drinks are brought before you even ask for them.

Food:
The one thing I've learned about Greek food is that if you serve it without it being hot, it just doesn't taste good. Yianni's food comes out of the kitchen piping hot. The flavors of the food are exquisite. I ordered the gyros and it was served in a style that was different than I am used to. Instead of being served in the pita, the meat was served with the tomatoes and onions on top of pita triangles with the sauce on the side. The portions are also more than enough. My only true complaint was that my soda was brought to me in a can, but Yianni's had just finished remodeling after the several hurricanes that hit the Treasure Coast in 2004 and 2005 and their soda fountain hadn't been installed yet.

Takeaways
  • The service is very good.
  • The food is delicious and the portions are more than adequate.
  • The prices are the best part.
