On Wednesday May 9th a Vegan couple was sentenced to life in prison after essentially killing their six week old child because they only fed it a diet of juice and soy products. The child actually died of starvation on April 24, 2004 and weighed a pathetic three and a half pounds when he perished.

The parents were convicted of several charges including cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter, felony murder, and malice murder. The couple was officially found guilty of these charges on May 2nd of this year (2007). Lawyers for the couple defended them by saying that the couple cared for their baby as best they could while still adhering to the strict Vegan lifestyle. Also the defense lawyers stated that the couple was unaware of how severely sick the child was up until mere minutes before he died. However the prosecution is declaring that this is not a 'Vegan' case, but rather a case of parental neglect and the fact that the couple simply did not feed their baby.

Vegans are the most hardcore of the Vegetarian family and shy away from using any animal product at all (including eggs, cheese, fish, seafood, honey, etc). Adults can handle this way of life because they will supplement their diet with vitamins, lots of vegetables and even meat substitutes, or a combination of all of these. However a new born baby, or really a small child of any age, cannot sustain good health while participating in the Vegan lifestyle.

Unfortunately this is not the first case of Vegan parents neglecting their child via malnutrition. Around April 2002 www.foxnews.com reported a vegan couple residing in New York City that starved their baby girl by not giving it breast milk and would only allow the baby to eat nuts and fruits. Luckily this young girl did not die, and the parents were later charged with reckless endangerment.

This is so sad, especially with all of the healthy alteratives out there. Breastfeeding and soy formulas are perfectly acceptable for vegan raised babies. A simple internet search can find so many resources. No child should ever, ever die because of such ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is forgivable and easily corrected, but stupidity lasts a lifetime.

I don't understand if the baby was only 6 weeks old, why on earth was it not just exclusively breastfeeding. The actual definition of a vegan is "a vegetarian who omits all animal products from the diet" according to dictionary.com. So why any vegan would consider breast MILK to be off their list of things to eat is completely beyond me.

Side note: I do realize that the parents were vegans before the child, but I'm just clarifying that even the most hardcore vegan can still have a thing or two to know about their lifestyle. I learn something new everyday as a vegetarian about health and vitamins.

I can't say I'm surprised by the situation because too many people who are first-time vegetarians or vegans (including myself) don't know how to eat or care for their body. It wasn't until the third time I tried that I perfected the health nutrients, etc. Hopefully, this situation will make other vegan parents pay more attention to the essential vitamins that a child needs. Even my doctor wasn't able to give me intelligent answers as to what I needed in my system when I told her I didn't eat meat, so I wonder if gynecologists and pediatricians are trained better. 3 lbs. is ridiculous though.

I don't know how they didn't notice either. The hospital was right across the street. He was born at home and never once in his life saw a doctor. These people give vegans, parents, and unassisted birthers ALL a bad name. Vegans know better than to starve their child, so do all good parents...and even a woman who delivers her babies at home KNOWS to go to the damn hospital if they are 3lbs at 6 weeks old. It's not just what he was eating but that he wasn't eating enough; their cupboards were totally bare. Apple juice blocks nutrient absorption which made it even harder for the child to survive on breastmilk and soy milk. This story is just screwed up.

Wait, she WAS breastfeeding? I don't know how you wouldn't notice your kid getting down to 3lbs. The whole thing is sad. :(

Znuage, I was thinking that perhaps in their twisted logic they thought breastfeeding is abusive to the breastfeeding mom. I've never known any vegans to think that, but I know several omnivores who don't/didn't breastfeed and make the comparison that they don't want to be a "cow." But it turns out this mom was breastfeeding, so I guess the poor choice of supplements (soy milk versus soy formula) decreased the baby's desire to nurse and get the actual nutrients he needed.

So sad...Great article..

Nooo the breast milk didn't have soy in it. She gave the child soy milk, which is an alternative to regular cow milk, but babies aren't supposed to drink any kind of milk but breast milk. :P

Ahhh, i see, according to one of the comments, seems that the breastmilk had soy in it... I don't see why they did that? What was the point? Breastmilk is great by itself!

That does not make sense, because usually Vegans are vegan because they are against the way animals are being treated. Breastfeeding should have nothing to do with being vegan. I know plenty of vegan mothers who breastfed their babies. That couple clearly just was crazy and very neglectful. Usually if one wants to raise their child as vegan, they would do SO MUCH research to ensure their child will grow up as healthy as possible. I know I would. This couple obviously didn't.

Thanks for the article, I hadn't heard about this!

From what I've read, she was breastfeeding but for some unknown reason was supplementing with soy milk and juice... the baby was obviously getting too much soy milk and juice, which isn't good for much but vitamin C, and not enough breastmilk

It's things like this that make me wonder if we need parenting licenses. Treating breastmilk as "dairy" is about as stupid as it gets.

I'm offended that some people aren't realizing that it was giving the baby junk before six months old that caused his death, not the vegan lifestyle. :/
