Haunted Lighthouses: Your Beacon to the Ghostly Realms
Like a castle raising up through the mist, sailors both past and present looked toward the shore for signs of rocks and obstacles that could mean impending doom. Structures of strength and elegance beacon from the broken sharp outcrops giving play to a paradoxical sense of the safety of being guided home and the danger of the sharp unpredictable edge of the seas. Lighthouses became the objects of both romance and tragedy. Seafarer stories of broken hearted widows waiting on the shores for their missing sailors only added sentiment and mystery to the structures that came to symbolize the fickle nature of the seas. No wonder there are so many haunting tales associated with these magnificent structures. Here are ten of my favorite tales:
1. Sequin Island Lighthouse -Maine- Sadness and isolation can plaque the keepers of the lights, however music is said to soothe the savage beast, or did it? People claim to hear the piano chords of the long lost occupants of the light house. Haunting melodies tell the tale of a wife that was chopped to bits by her husband, the former light keeper.
2. St. Augustine Lighthouse -Florida- Famous from the Ghost Hunters episodes, this light house is both spectacular and spooky. Denise Villani stated "there have been seven people who have died on the lighthouse grounds: three light keepers, a keeper's wife and three young girls." Although all the deaths were from different causes, there is no escaping the paranormal activity that manifests all over the site of this magnificent building. Whether it is footsteps from the unknown or a misty figure, this lighthouse seems to have a life of its own when the sun goes down. The place is definitely haunted.
3. Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, Toronto Islands, Toronto, Ontario - Having nothing to hide this structure bears a plague telling the tale of an early light keeper named John Paul Rademuller . John Paul liked his beer, so did others that came to visit him, that is all except the person that cut up and murdered John Paul. They say he still wanders the lands looking for his body parts. I think he is looking for a tall cool drink.
