It is known that a prisoner is typically awarded a final meal of their choice before they are scheduled to be executed. Inmates facing the decision of what to eat would probably want steak or crab legs. A lavish meal for one is what the prison would expect as the inmate's final selection. For Philip Workman, he refused to eat his last meal. Instead, Workman chose to have his final meal given to a homeless person.

Philip Workman was convicted of killing a police officer during a robbery of a restaurant. His case has seen a great deal of publicity from the media. The individual who testified against Workman has come forward to admit to lying about the incident. Workman has had five dates set for his execution. On three separate occasions, Philip Workman has been within three days of his death before his appeal went through. The final appeal failed and Workman was executed Wednesday May 9, 2007.

His request for the final meal was that a pizza be sent to a homeless person to enjoy. Workman recollected his days as a homeless person and recalled the fight to have enough food to eat. His request for a vegetarian pizza donation was refused by Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.

The usual last meal costs less than $20.00. The Riverbend Maximum Security Institution was unable to meet the request, because tax-ppayers money was not allotted to make donations.

Philip Workman's generosity was noted by both the public and the media. Even PETA took an interest in the situation. Vegetarian pizzas began rolling into Tennessee charities this week. One lady used her credit card to help fill the request. A delivery of 150 pizzas were received at a local homeless shelter at a cost of about $1200!

Numerous charities received anonymous donations of pizza in the name of Philip Workman. Although a meal of pizza is common to many in Tennessee and around the U.S., this hot, delicious meal is a luxury for the homeless. Homeless individuals and families have a hard enough time getting a warm meal to eat, let alone a pizza party! Many recipients of the vegetarian pizzas were aware of the circumstances related to the donation.

Takeaways
  • The prison said they do not provide donations to charity.
  • The prison said they do not provide donations to charity.
  • The homeless get a pizza party.

wow, imagine if this guy was innocent-not only did he get the shaft on being executed, but even his last request wasn't honored. If he was innocent he must have felt that much worse seeing that even his last request wasn't honored.

Having been a career criminal myself (although not a very dangerous, good or successful one, now retired) and having done some prison time, I can say from experience that a large number of criminals do have a soft spot for society's underdogs. Al Capone fed 3000 people a day at his soup line during the great depression. Stanton E. Samenow Phd. calls this tendency "criminal sentimentality" and he believes that it mostly has to do with self-justification. I'm not sure what it is, different people have different motives. I don't feel qualified to comment on this man's guilt or innocence, but wanting to end one's life on a positive note is reasonable. However I'd rather depend on a sentimental crook than on a heartless "law-abiding citizen." It's also good to remember that most of the great leaders of the authoritarian left and right turned out to be little more than psychopathic mass-murderers. One's good deeds do not excuse one's wrongdoings, but go ahead and do them anyway. It certainl

A shame that he was executed although the witness said he lied. A noteworthy idea. Just think about Dominoes 5,5,5 deal. A good idea might be for a call to go out for everyone to call in for the deal to send to a local shelter. Each person with just $15 could make a small difference. What a surprise this would be for children in a sheleter and its not even Chrsitmas time

Great article, a lot of people wouldn't have known about this, if you didn't write about this topic here on AC.

I beleive he declined to eat a last meal. His appeals for a retrial based on forsenic evidence that the bullet that killed the police officer came from "friendly fire" was denied.

What did the prison end up doing with his last meal if they didn't give it to a homeless person as he asked? Did he just not get a meal, or did he decide to get something for himself after all? Just curious. It's awesome how so many people were inspired to generosity.

It's great that something good came out of something negative. Even though the man's request wasn't directly honored, in the end his unselfish request was even more helpful for those in need.

I think it's a great sentiment too. I am sure, though, if the prison system had honored it the article headlines for this story would have read, "Taxpayer dollars splurged at request of Death Row Felon". Sad.

Wow this is a beautiful story of a generous person. I am 100% against the death penalty, where I did want to be a prosecuter at one time. Oh and Nancy Grace is someone I admire greatly. Wonder what she would say about this last request?

This was a very unselfish last meal choice for the inmate. I just wish he could have known the ultimate impact that he made! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I'm so glad you brought this to our attention. A deed this kind should not go unnoticed.

A thoughtful choice and meaningful statement; it's too bad the authorities couldn't find a way to honor it.
