A Review of Oishinbo - Gourmet Japanese Groceries, Sushi and Snacks in Harrison, NY
Grocery Shop or Grab a Quick Lunch at Oishinbo
Oishinbo: Gourmet Japanese Groceries in Harrison, NYCatering to Southern Westchester's large Japanese population and located just a a few minutes from White Plains, Oishinbo is one of my favorite gourmet food stores in the area. The store is small, but the shelves are packed with food and other Japanese products, and the narrow aisles are always full of local Japanese families doing their grocery shopping.
A Wide Range of Gourmet Foods at Oishinbo
For those who want to cook Japanese food at home, Oishinbo has everything you need, from thin-sliced beef for shabu-shabu to several different kinds of tofu. For college students - Harrison is just a short drive from SUNY Purchase and Manhattanville - and other fans of heat-and-eat foods, Oishinbo offers dozens of varieties of Japanese instant noodles and lots frozen dumplings and other snacks. For kids and other lovers of sweets, Oishinbo sells Japanese candy, including several varieties of Pocky, as well as ice cream - in flavors like green tea and red bean - and popsicles in the freezer section. Oishinbo also devotes the large part of an aisle to Japanese teas. However, if you want to do a full-scale grocery shop and aren't an accomplished Japanese cook, Oishinbo probably isn't the right choice: this store focuses on Japanese food and doesn't offer many American pantry staples.
Grab Sushi or a Boxed Lunch at Oishinbo
Along with groceries, Oishinbo is a great place to grab a quick lunch. Every day they sell tasty boxed lunches for about seven dollars. Each lunch includes a main dish like beef sukiyaki or chicken teriyaki, along with rice with sesame seeds on top, seaweed salad, and delicious Japanese pickle. They also sell small grocery store style plates and bowls of sushi and sashimi, though the quality is much better than at most grocery stores. One friend of mine who lived in Japan for a year says that the sushi at Oishinbo is better than the sushi she's eaten at some Westchester restaurants.
