"Newsweek" Palin Cover a Big Controversy: "Newsweek" Clarifies Thought Process
"Newsweek" Explains Palin Cover in Light of Recent Attacks by Palin
The Newsweek Palin cover has stirred up controversy. Palin, sporting short shorts and standing by a flag, is seen on the Newsweek cover. Palin was infuriated by the cover photo, calling it "sexist" and "out of context" in an attack written on her own FaceBook page. The idea behind the article and cover photo was to show the world that Palin is distracting, deflecting, and pretty much bad for America. Palin supporters are furious, while her critics think that the magazine's choice in cover photos couldn't be better. In light of the controversy, Newsweek explains why they chose the image that they did.You might wonder why Sarah Palin would allow herself to be photographed wearing short shorts. She was profiled for a runner's magazine, and the photograph was taken for them. It was used out of context on the Newsweek cover, and the fact that it was misused upset the former Alaskan Governor.
Newsweek contends that their choice in the photo was the most interesting image available to illustrate the theme of the cover. The theme of the cover and the article is to raise questions about Sarah Palin's seriousness.
According to Newsweek, Managing Editor Daniel Klaidman stated the following about the editorial choice:
Since [Sarah Palin] has been on the national stage, there have been these questions about her gravitas and her seriousness. Sarah Palin has cultivated this image of a down-home, folksy, outdoorsy woman. And I'm not suggesting it's not authentic, but there is a sense in which she understands that it resonates politically. There are a lot of people who would see that image and say 'that's Sarah Palin, that's why she connects with people, there's that authenticity.' I don't think this is an image that is taken out of context, especially when you consider what the point of the story was: to raise these questions about her seriousness.
According to the Huffington Post, Sarah Palin's criticisms of the cover photo as posted on her FaceBook page reads:
