Early 2009-10 NBA Analysis: The Top Contenders, Part 2
The five preseason favorites (Lakers, Magic, Spurs, Celtics, and Cavs) have not exactly lived up to the early hype. Orlando has been without some key players, but have played solid throughout, the Lakers continue their trend of playing down to their opponents, and the Celtics seem to have trouble staying interested. Meanwhile the Cavs and Spurs hardly look like championship contenders.
The Preseason Favorites
Orlando: They got through their time without Rashard Lewis and Ryan Anderson has looked great doing his best to fill in. I thought the loss of Turkoglu, who I believe was the Magic's MVP last year, would be huge. While Vince Carter may have had a better individual career than Turkoglu, Hedo brought more to the table for the Magic. However, couple VC with Ryan Anderson and the host of newcomers the magic have picked up (Matt Barnes, Brandon Bass, Jason Williams) and they may actually be in a much better position than last season. Provided their new pieces can gel together, the Magic have to be the favorites to win the Eastern Conference.
