British Prime Minister Tony Blair Resigns

Tony Blair, Prime Minister of Great Britain has announced in a speech to party activists that he will stand down as Prime Minister on June 27, according to reports by BBC News (news.bc.co.uk).

Blair made the announcement in a speech, after briefing the Cabinet. He is stay on in Downing Street until the party elects a new leader, which is predicted to be Gordon Brown.

Tony Blair made an emotional speech to the Sedgefield constituency, where his political career began which he said that he had been the prime minister for 10 years, which was"long enough" for the country and himself. He also said that he had been lucky to lead "the greatest nation on earth" and apologized fro when he had fallen short.

Tony Blair, of the Labor Party has been the Prime Minister of England for ten years. His resignation was stated, as reported by BBC,

"On the 27th of June, I will tender my resignation from the office of Prime Minister, to the Queen."

Blair summed up his ten year term in office by saying "Accept one thing, hand on heart, I did what I thought was right."

Blair experienced criticism from the constituency for his support of George Bush and the United States in regard to the War in Iraq. Blair stood by his decision to support the war by insisting that it was right to see the war through, that it was a test of will. Blair stated the belief that Britain must not fail.

Blair described his tenure as Prime Minister and his life by saying he had been born after the Second World War and was a young man in the social revolution of the 60's and 70's He said he reached political maturity as the Cold War was ending and "the world was going through a political, economic and technological revolution."

"I looked at my own country, a great country - a wonderful history, magnificent traditions, proud of it's past, but strangely uncertain of it's future, uncertain about the future, almost old fashioned."

I wasn't prepared to hear this, so it came as a shock to me. I love the way the Brits go about some things in government. Nice coverage.
