The tropical island paradise of Hawaii has called everyone from celebrities like Elvis and Pierce Brosnan (who owns real estate on the island of Kauai), to important politicians (including many past United States presidents), to writers (Jack London) and photographers. The Aloha State appeals to everyone. Unfortunately, a vacation in Hawaii often seems like a daunting ordeal with the cost of transportation, hotels, and food seeming to grow more expensive every year.

However, taking a vacation in Hawaii doesn't mean you have to empty out all your savings and deplete your retirement account. The Hawaiian islands offer many discount lodging, and the beauty of nature is free for the taking! Take it from a local: If you're smart, you can easily vacation in Hawaii on a budget.

There are five major islands in the state of Hawaii: Starting from the north (and the oldest), you have Kauai which is followed by Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the island of Hawaii (often called the "Big Island"). The major vacation destinations are Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Kauai is known for its rural state, lush environment, beautiful beaches, and no high-rise developments. Oahu hosts the state's capital, as well as the world-famous Waikiki beach. This is countered by a very city feeling, and the accompanying traffic and crime. Maui is fast becoming a city, with major development everywhere. However, it is very popular with tourists and caters to the visitors' needs. The Big Island is part lush rainforest, and part arid lavarock with an active volcano that regularly erupts.

Tourists with a lot of money can easily spend almost $1000 on a room at luxury resorts like the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa on Kauai, or the Grand Wailea on Maui. These two resorts cater to high-end visitors who are willing to spend an extra $300 just for an ocean-view window. The great thing is that budget-conscious travelers can get this ocean-view window for a lot cheaper!
