Janet Jackson Interview with Robin Roberts: Opens Up About Michael, Jermaine Dupri and Body Image

The Janet Jackson interview with Robin Roberts was, to say the least, revelatory. The 43-year-old singer sat down with Robin Roberts for an exclusive interview that aired Wednesday night (one day after the release of her new album, "Number Ones") and discussed, among other things, her brother Michael Jackson's death, her breakup with Jermaine Dupri and her struggles with her body image.

Not surprisingly, the Janet Jackson interview focused quite a bit on the untimely death of her legendary brother Michael Jackson.

"I just couldn't believe it," said Jackson of when she first learned about Michael's death. "It didn't ring true to me. It felt like a dream. ... To this day, it's still so difficult for me to believe. You have to accept what is, but it's hard."

One of the most touching, tear-inducing moments of Michael Jackson's memorial was when his beautiful 11-year-old daughter Paris fell into the arms of Janet Jackson after saying a few emotion-packed words about her beloved father. Janet talked about how she wanted to embrace and protect all of Michael's children at that moment.

Janet Jackson said that the King of Pop was in denial about his drug use; she said that the Jackson family attempted to intervene a number of times, but were unable to persuade Michael to clean up his act. "Those are the things that you do when you love someone," said Janet. "You can't just let them continue on that way. And we did a few times. We weren't very successful."

And Janet Jackson pretty much confirmed - and I'm being judicious here - what a "peculiar" character family patriarch Joe Jackson is. She notes that the harsh disciplinary tactics (which reportedly included beatings) Joe Jackson inflicted upon his brood were "a little abusive." She also briefly discussed why she calls her father (as Michael did) by his first name: "He said, 'I'm Joe, not dad'... It is what it is... I've never questioned it."
