When in Rome: A Review
You will laugh, you will cry, you will have 90% of this romantic comedy figured out within the first ten minutes. But really, how does that make "When In Rome" (starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel) any different than any other movie in this genre? Well it does not; and really, who cares?
As usual, this movie fits into its genre's mold perfectly. A smart, sexy career woman with no time for a man gets her heart broken (once again) and then falls madly in love with a stranger whom she spends the remainder of the movie either pursuing or avoiding. The hook that "When In Rome" uses to stand out from the crowd is a cast consisting of Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, John Heder, and Dax Shepard.
These actors play the four men unfortunate enough to accidentally fall in love with Bell. They also, (in my humble opinion) accidentally steal the whole movie. DeVito perfectly channels some of his "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" character into this new love-struck role, making the audience laugh out loud at his inept attempts to woo Bell. However, he also manages to bring the crowd near tears towards the end.
Will Arnett and Dax Shepard both manage to bring the comedic edge that will amuse the male viewers as they, too attempt to win Bell's affection. Ultimately, it was John Heder as a struggling magician (and a special cameo guest who some viewers will instantly recognize) that helped to culture the warm, humorous atmosphere the film was aiming for.
And finally we get the two lead characters, played by Bell and Duhamel. As mentioned above, Bell plays a career woman with a stressful job (curator at the Guggenheim museum no less) and no time to search for a lover. The only part that I found a bit unbelievable was the fact that her character was both very attractive and very single. The other half of the on-screen couple (as played by Duhamel) paired up nicely as the not quite career man who fell hopelessly in love.
