Stuck in Recliner for 8 Months, 800 Lb SC Man Dead

Knee Surgery Confines Morbidly Obese Man to His Chair, Resulting in Death

Daniel Webb's weight was estimated at 800 lbs, although his wife says it was closer to 500. Whatever the final number, the weight confined the SC man to his recliner for eight months following knee surgery and ultimately killed him.

Fox News reports that the Greenwood, SC man had knee surgery in March of this year and although his wife asked hospital officials to keep him longer, without insurance they had little recourse but to send him home. Warned that he probably wouldn't be able to get up from the recliner, he asked paramedics to place him there anyway. 33-year-old Webb, a former preacher, continued to share his love for the Lord from his computer while confined to that recliner for the past eight months. He met his wife, Ada, on MySpace several years ago and died on their second wedding anniversary.

The CDC considers one to be overweight with a body-mass index (BMI) of 25-25.9, BMI greater than 30 is considered obese, while extreme obesity is a BMI of greater than 40. Medical Dictionary defines morbid obesity as someone being 100 lbs or more over their ideal weight.

How does a person become morbidly obese?

There are many factors that can lead to morbid obesity - genetics, diet (to include overeating as well as eating certain types of food), various medical conditions, lack of exercise - but more likely it is a result of a combination of these things. Daniel Webb was thought to be approximately 550 lbs prior to the surgery. Being confined to a recliner for eight months with virtually no physical activity whatsoever save tapping the keyboard of a laptop, it's not hard to see why his weight would have increased dramatically over that time, ultimately resulting in his death from a heart attack.

Could Daniel have been helped?

Help was available, if Daniel Webb could get to it. Due to his size and confinement to the chair, it was impossible for Webb to get to the facilities that might be able to assist him in a battle towards weight loss and better health. Without aid to help lose the weight, he was destined for continued confinement in the recliner - a true catch 22.
