Former Massachusetts governor, Mitt Romney, who in the past has called the practice of polygamy (having multiple wives) "bizarre," recently called it an "awful" practice, and said he understands why many people find it "troubling." Polygamy is the first thing most people think of when Mormonism is mentioned. The Mormon Church outlawed the practice in 1890.

Romney, while distancing himself from his church's past, also understands why it was practiced early in the history of Mormonism. He explained the practice as a way to help the Mormons build up their numbers while settling in the desert of Utah. His great-great-grandfather had a dozen wives and his great-grandfather had five. His great-great-grandfather was told to take additional wives and he obeyed.

Romney, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination for the 2008 elections, made his comments in an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes," for a program to be aired this coming Sunday.

Although the Mormon Church officially banned polygamy and still excommunicates Mormons who practice it, there are an estimated 30,000-60,000 breakaway Mormons in Utah and nearby states who have multiple wives. Many persons, excommunicated for practicing polygamy, still consider themselves Mormons.

The history of Mormon polygamy goes back to Joseph Smith, the founder of the faith, who reportedly had two dozen wives. His successor, Brigham Young, had 20. Polygamy was banned not so much on religious grounds as on practical ones, when officials in Washington D.C. threatened to deny statehood to Utah unless polygamy was ended.

It would be nice to see Mitt Romney looked at for his own beliefs and his own personal track record and not for the views of his dead ancestors. For some reason when someone is found to be "Mormon" polygamy is one of the first things to come into question.

Faithful to one. Faithful to 20. Anything except 'faithful to zero' is a step in the right direction.

Agreed, personally i think it's unfair how only men can do this [in most cases that is] and women are not allowed to take multiple partners. That's why I prefer polyamory! ;)

I don't have any issues with polygamy. If something works for a certain family, then so be it. Romney needs to get over it.

Maybe some day campaigns will deal with the issues and not focus on religious affiliations. The Mormons have made it clear that Polygamy is a thing of the past in their faith. Those who choose to practice it are not supported by the church. Every religion has their set of outcasts who behave radically outside of the faith they believe. Let Mitt move on with the real issues.

I agree with znuage, however, the way fundamentalist mormon style polygamy is practiced generally, all kinds of well documented and researched abuse is integral. I think the only hope for functional polygamy would be practiced outside of religious dogmatic compulsion. I have known several families who are three and four-married, and it really seems to work for them, and seems quite appealing.

"Monogamous people can be horrible too, so can polyamarous people" True, but let's not take this article out of context. It (polygamy) is generally much more degrading to women than men. Why? Not too many women have alot of husbands, it is the other way around.

I personally don't think that its polygamy that is awful, it's how some people choose to handle polygamy. For example, a woman who willingly married to a man and practice polygamy and is very happy and raises their children to be open-minded and does not force the child to practice polygamy as well. Then i see nothing wrong with that. People like that do exist. I was watching 'Secret Lives of Women' who covered the topic. It's the people, well mostly men who marry young girls, abuse them, and force their children to practice polygamy and so on, that's what is horrible. Monogamous people can be horrible too, so can polyamarous people.
