10 Must Have Country Albums
Most of the albums listed here are greatest hits collections. However, if you were going to start a country album collection Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and George Strait surely would be on your list. I added Marty Robbins album because it is the album which made me like country music. Alan Jackson is a dominating force in the current country music scene and Shania Twain's album is one of the best selling albums of all time.
The Essential Johnny Cash Johnny Cash is a great place to start any country album collection. The johnnycashstore.com states the collection "does present three-dozen satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels." Treats include Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan performing "Girl from the North Country", "The Wanderer" with U2, and "The Patriot" with country legend Marty Robbins. Also appearing on the disc are country greats Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings on "The Highway Man." Waylon Jennings also appears on the song "The Night Hank Williams." Besides the collaborations with the big name artists the album includes classic Johnny Cash songs like "Ring of Fire", "Man in Black", and "I Walk The Line" to name a few.
Hank Williams was one of the most influential singers in country music. No country music collection would be complete without Hank Williams. I would suggest the Ultimate Collections, which consists of two discs and a DVD. The two CD's include over 40 songs. The first song of Hank Williams I remember is "Cool Water" however the version I heard was done by Marty Robbins. The collection includes such classics as "There's a Tear in My Beer", "Hey Good Lookin'", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", and "I Saw The Light." (Source for track list: losthighwayrecords.com)
