I am generally one of the easiest people to please when it comes to a movie. I rarely hate them. And it has to be pretty bad for it to be on my "worst" list.
Vincent Gallo's Brown Bunny is the epitome of "worst" films. Honestly, the only redeeming value that I could find is that it ends.
I admit, I went to see it out of curiosity on the controversial sex scene that had Chloe Sevigny lose her agent. That is the last time I will do that.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate art films- most of my favorite films are art films. And I don't require a film be pristine and crisp and crystal clear or all that beautiful to enjoy it. Thirteen was none of those and I loved it. Brown Bunny just wasn't working it for me, in fact it is the worst film I have ever seen. And I work for a film festival, so I've seen some bad films.
In Vincent Gallo's credit, it was an interesting idea. For a short film.
The lighting is awful. Most of the time the camera isn't in focus and a majority of the cuts aren't motivated. The music, ok so it is a decent soundtrack, doesn't match the film at all. The sound mixing is terrible. The acting is frigid. It seriously looks as though none of them have acted and are reading directly from a script. It's awful I tell you.
But the worst thing? The cinematography is unjustifiably horrid. A good portion of the film is in his van. Either the camera is pointing out the windshield or at him- with his head cut off due to bad framing.
I would say it is definitely a film for all aspiring filmmakers to see for examples of what NOT to do. Buffalo 66 was good, but Vincent Gallo somehow took a wrong turn with this one.
And the controversial "sex scene" is not worth the time or money to see this film. I am no prude, in fact I am quite the opposite. But this scene made me feel uncomfortable. I can understand how you would lose an agent over it.
