How to Choose Spa Treatments on a Cruise Ship

Add More Relaxation to Your Cruise Vacation

Most cruise ships have lovely spa facilities offering everything from manicures, pedicures, facials and massages to more exotic treatments like mud wraps. How do you decide which one to choose if you're not familiar with these experiences? Here are some pointers:

1) Opt for a regular massage if you've never had a spa treatment before. Other treatments might sound appealing, but it's always good to start out simple. You can book a minor variation, such as an aromatherapy massage (which uses scented oils) or a hot stone massage (in which you are massaged with heated volcanic stones), but don't stray too far into exotic territory.

2) Consider expanding your horizons if you're a spa veteran. Cruise ship offerings are getting more exotic. Many ships offer exotic massages such as a "four handed" treatment with two masseuses or a bamboo massage, in which pieces of bamboo are rolled against the skin. You may even want to try a wrap. Many onboard spas will combine a seaweed wrap, salt wrap or similar treatment with a half body massage so you get the best of both worlds.

3) Try a treatment that doesn't require disrobing if you are shy. You may want to treat yourself, but you may also feel awkward stripping down and jumping on a massage table. Book a facial, which allows you to feel pampered while keeping your clothes on. You can also choose a manicure or pedicure, but those are easy to get back on land. Expand your horizons and try something more extensive and relaxing.

4) Save some money with port day specials. You choices may be dictated by your budget, so you can often save some money if you are willing to have a treatment on a port day. Most people are playing on shore, so the shipboard spa may offer discounts to lure in more business. Inquire about these specials when you board the ship.

If you're really stumped about what to book, head to the spa early on embarkation day. Shipboard spas usually offer tours on the first day where you can learn about the treatments offered and ask any questions so you can be sure to select something you will really enjoy.
