Jake Gyllenhaal and Health Ledger starred in an Ang Lee gem which is about two star-crossed cowboys whom fall in a forbidden love. It is a story of two young men, a Wyoming ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who encounter one another in the summer of 1963 sheepherding. The two form an unconventional bond which has many interesting twists and turns that I will not detail to ruin for you here. The film has been touted as one of the top prospects for the Oscars. It did not win despite its original plot; it certainly toes the line of America's sensibilities. Many wonder why the movie was rated R, when in many countries, such as Japan it was rated the much less restrictive PG-12 on the movie. It seems that the movie's sensitive subject had to be dealt with stricter ratings in many "Western nations" including Australia which rated it as an "M," which is similar to our Restricted rating.
I am not easily impressed by movies but the story telling was not slow but dramatic. It was simply wondrous story telling. It will make the squeamish and homophobic among us extremely uncomfortable but it was the story of two people who truly had a love for one another. Their love for me transcended their respective genders and made me appreciate the movie as it was.
Not only was the movie on the pulse of American sensibilities but the movie itself was well done. The cinematography was incredible, the quality of both picture and sound were ideal. Gyllenhaal, Ledger, and their fellow leads are all amazing actors and portray the scenes vividly. Ledger was once so passionate in his role that he almost broke Gyllenhaal's nose.
The movie was superb, I'd say out of my scale of 1-10, with ten being the best, it was about a 9. The movie was very entertaining and so up to date, which was refreshing. It was the typical format of a love movie, do not get me wrong, however, the script itself was pretty flawless and the movie kept my interest which is pretty hard to do. The movie's end was poignant and definitely made the viewer reflect on his own values which was amazing.
Brokeback Mountain: Current and Wonderous Movie of the Year
Loneliness in the face of beauty is the primary theme of Ang Lee's latest movie, Brokeback Mountain, adapted closely from the acclaimed novella by E. Annie Proulx.
