Salads are a summer staple because they are light, healthy, and delicious. Nowadays, salads are made from a variety of different types of greens, vegetables, and fruits. Sometimes they are mixed with nuts, sunflower seeds, croutons and other toppings like cheese or eggs. When used for a full-course meal, they are often topped with a selection of meats like ham, chicken, shrimp and more.

However, a salad isn't a salad if you don't have the right dressing to top it off. Luckily today, there is a wide variety of dressing flavors to choose from matched only by the number of brands now available on the market. But who makes the best salad dressing? That is definitely the question.

My family eats a lot of salads all year long. However, we all have different tastes in dressing. Some of us like the standards while others of us like something a bit out of the ordinary. Consequently, we have tried a lot of different ones over the years.

I decided to do a little survey to determine what the favorite salad dressings might be and which brand is popular with the most people. Using my family as a base and adding another group of friends, I came up with a cross-section of people. Here are the results.

Almost everyone likes the standards French, Italian, thousand island, and ranch. One-third of the people surveyed chose ranch as their favorite dressing. However, the dressing blend (e.g., buttermilk ranch versus cucumber ranch, etc.) and brand varied from person to person. Still, the majority preferred standard ranch dressing to any blend.

A surprising number of people I interviewed like some of the more unusual dressings like Asian Sesame Ginger, Sun Dried Tomato, and Raspberry Vinaigrette.

The choice of dressing brand was much less decisive. Kraft dressing barely won out over Wish-Bone. Oddly enough, a large number of people actually preferred some of the newer brands like Ken's Steakhouse and Newman's Own.

You should try Nancy's Healthy Kitchen LITE Salad dressing. It's LITE but not bland. When I compare the nutritional value with the others, I think it's one of the best if not the very best. Thanks

Great review! I forget what brand it is, but I love this tangy tomato bacon dressing-- but I just became a vegetarian! I also love peppercorn parmesean. I enjoy Newman's Own. I buy a lot of store brands too when they have those 10 for $10 sales.... ; )

Hi Charlotte, My favorite is just plain oil and vinegar. Just shake a little of both and I am good to go. I guess I'm old-fashioned about somethings. Great article. Bye

Printing it out! My husband has 5 bottles of Ken's Ceasar in the cabinet (he lives in fear of running out of it).

You put a lot of work into this! I usually choose Three Cheese Ranch from Kraft or Light Done Right Blue Cheese. I think Light Done Right is Kraft, but I'm not positive. I think it's one of the best light varieties. Excellent review!

I am a Kraft fan myself....but also like others. Thanks for the great reviews.

My favorite is Ken's Sweet Vidalia Onion. I didn't know they have a raspberry pecan. I'll have to look for that one.

Oh I hate to say it, but there really isn't anything better than ranch or bleu cheese made from scratch. But, if I had to pick a brand I would go with Ken's Steakhouse Ranch. Great article!

My daughter lives by the St Lawrence Seaway, where 1000 Islands dressing was invented at one of the hotels. no brand compares to the real deal. I wish I had never gone to visit. Now I'm ruined. HA!

Annie's raspberry vinaigrette is surely one of them.

Great, thorough review, Charlotte! I love Newman's and Ken's also - but I started using the South Beach Diet salad dressings. They are low calorie, low carb, and not too much sugar. They are also very tasty - Ranch, Italian, and Balsamic Vinegar are my 3 favs. Thanks.
