MacBook Air: Do I Really Need This Computer?
My wife has a thing for cute computers which is why she likes Macintosh every once in awhile. Yes, Macintosh excels at things like graphics and ultralight and ultrathin laptops that are convenient to store and use and the new MacBook Air is no exception.
Starting at $1500, yes, that is expensive for a small 13 inch laptop, the MacBook Air lacks many things on a standard laptop such as plug ins and USB ports and all the nice things that are supposed to go with computers. But what they sacrifice in modality they make up for in portability.
If being friendly to the environment is a concern then this computer is for you as well. Made from aluminum and using less energy due to its size and flexibility, the MacBook Air received a gold rating on its EPEAT standards. So this computer is nicer to the environment. But it still weighs heavily in the pocketbook.
I'm a strong enough guy and ergonomical enough to think that I won't need to pack a lot of stuff on that long trip and carrying a slightly heavier and larger laptop really isn't a factor for me. If you love compactness (my wife the storage geek does) then you will have eyes of hearts for this computer. But I really don't like it, even after seeing the gorgeous graphics and movies on the HD screen.
Yes, it is less than an inch thick but who cares? We're not trying to smuggle this baby over the border, I just want a good computer. If you specialize in portable graphics computers this is for you. I do like other Macintosh models once I got used to them. But I don't think I could ever get used to the MacBook Air.
