Gift from Father
A New Jersey man was arrested Friday for allegedly providing his 13-year old son with marijuana. The boy, who was caught with the drug in school, told police that the pot was a 13th birthday gift from his dad. When questioned further, the child provided more incriminating information about his father, including the whereabouts of drugs and drug paraphernalia in the home. The teen was taken to the police station for questioning, and his grandmother was called in as well.

Charges
Both the father, 39 year-old Albert F. Fuller, Sr., and the 13-year old son, whose name is withheld because he is a minor, face drug charges in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The boy was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana. The father is charged with drug possession as well as endangering the welfare of a child. The father is being held on $25,000 bail, and is ordered not to have any contact with the child.

Search of Home
The pair live in the home of the child's grandmother, who is a legal guardian of the teen. The grandmother gave police permission to do a search. When police conducted a search of the premises, they found several bags of marijuana as well as methamphetamines hidden above ceiling lights in the basement of the home.

Parental Drug Use Affects Kids
According to a Study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the use of marijuana by a parent triples the risk that a child will use marijuana. This is true for both mothers and fathers, and for both sons and daughters, and applies to all ethnic and racial groups. For parents who used cigarettes, alcohol, or cocaine, their children were even more likely to use marijuana.

It's sad when stories like this don't surprise me anymore. I hope the kid grows up knowing enough to stay away from drugs.

Great article. Makes me wonder - did this father REALLY think it was ok to give pot to his kid as a birthday gift?

Mike, I certainly did not imply causation, I simply stated what the report found.

It's too bad that the father, it sounds like, lives with the grandmother too? Humm I wonder why the grandmother had custody in the first place? Moderate pot smoking? sounds like Bobs brain has already suffered the affects of pot smoking. Anyone who would give their son or daughter for his or her birthday is a total irresponsible, immature, pathetic excuse for an adult, letting alone a parent.

Bob - Pot shouldn't be made illegal? Pot is already illegal, and yes I agree, parents shouldn't allow kids to smoke cigarettes or drink either, but that isn't what this particular article is about. It's about a father who gave his kid pot. I realize that ALL pot smokers wouldn't be that irresponsible, and I never said they were. I mentioned my personal experience as an example of irresponsibility on the part of an adult who hurt his family - especially his kids. I wasn't making a generalization.

Interesting story but sad choice on the father's part.

"The report also found a strong correlation between adolescent marijuana use and juvenile delinquency. Students who used marijuana were more likely to be aggressive and have behavioral problems." You state Correlation (which is true) and then incorrectly imply Causation. Repeat after me: Correlation is NOT Causation. There are root causes for both juvenile delinquency and drug use, and those causes are poverty and low self-esteem.

"Unfortunately, some people are convinced that pot should be legal to smoke, and they claim it doesn't cause any damage." - Giving your 13-year-old pot is as irresponsible as giving your 13-year-old beer or cigarettes - and we see that all of the time (except it doesn't make the news). Marijuana users would be foolish to claim pot doesn't do damage, especially to growing children (and most moderately educated pot smokers would agree) - but that doesn't mean we should make it illegal. What you went through is awful, but you'll probably never understand that your situation was indeed an exception. That's unfortunate.

Great article! It's pretty sad when the biggest news stories that seem to come up everyday lately involve some form of child abuse. Hopefully, this kid will learn from this and they'll keep him as far away from this guy as possible.

Sad, sad article. The dad is obviously not fit.

I'm not surprised by the fact that the grandma has custody, and not the real father. Interesting bit of news that I wouldn't have heard otherwise.

I will say that wether or not a parent is using the drug... your child should know that if they ever did try a drug they can talk to you about it. (you don't want them doing that kind of stuff behind your back!) However, there is no excuse for giving your own 13 year old child drugs. That is severely immature on behalf of the father. No wonder it was the grandmother who had legal custody!

Unfortunately, some people are convinced that pot should be legal to smoke, and they claim it doesn't cause any damage. Of course they're smoking it and want to justify what they're doing. I have an ex like that, and that mentality got them into a lot of legal trouble, not to mention just about ruined a few lives. After losing his family, thousands of dollars, and almost everything else that's important, he keeps smoking the crap. I could never change the man, but I was too young to realize it at the time. Some never learn. Not that all pot smokers would involve their kid - those are the lowest people in my opinion. It is truly a shame that any moron can be a parent.
