Life is one big interruption. No matter what you are trying to do, sometimes it seems as though the further into your work you go, the harder the world tries to distract you. This is a common human condition. It is called an overcrowded planet! But since there is nothing morally acceptable we can do about the situation as it is now, let's focus on managing the pitfalls.

First, remember you are getting paid for all of this. I am sure you do this often but it is worth reiterating, just in case. A quick flash of the next enjoyable thing you are planning on doing with your money ought to provide good motivation to power past a distraction and further into your work.

Second, and most importantly, differentiate between good and bad distractions, and between ones you can control and ones you cannot. If you get a random idea that spring to you naturally through the course of your work, this is a good distraction. Write it on a note to placate yourself and return to your work. The Key element of a bad distraction is persistence. And then it comes down to whether or not you can exercise control over this distraction in order to return to harmony.

If it is a person then most likely you can exercise control over them, at least enough to have them out of your space so that you may continue on with your work. They may not like you for it, but sometimes that is the price of focus.

Of course I assume most reading this essay are concerned with persistent distractions over which they have no control, and that is where the challenge becomes unique. That is where it becomes internal. To find the will to focus on the external assignment within yourself. The key to all of this is to see these challenges as an integral part of life. What good is life if it reveals nothing of man and his character? And what other method is there to truly reveal a man's character than to test his resolve?

So see this as not just a challenge to your commitment but an opportunity to prove yourself. An opportunity to forge your concentration in fire and have it come out the other side stronger than ever.
