Details of 3 Car Crash Involving Michelle D. Hampton, 16, of Wentzville, Missouri
She Missed a Stop Sign on Route P
November 23, 2009 - At 5:22 pm, Michelle D. Hampton, 16, of Wentzville, Missouri died from a 3-car accident when she failed to stop for a posted stop sign. According to Missouri Highway Patrol, Michelle was driving a 1994 Chevy Corsica, failed to stop at the posted sign entering US Highway 61 at Route P, and was struck on the left side of her vehicle by a 2007 Chevy Avalanche. Ouch! I believe the speed limit at that location is 55 miles per hour, if I'm not mistaken. The Avalanche was driven by Robert E. Wieland, 50, of Troy Missouri. The impact of the 2 vehicles pushed the Avalanche into the right front side of the third vehicle, a 1998 Buick Regal driven by 43 year old Michael R. Walton of Moscow Mills, Missouri. All 3 drivers were wearing their seat belts. Michelle was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Charles County EMS.
One resident in Troy said , I "was on my way home around 7:00 or so and the traffic was backed up to the Wentzville exit...I ended up turning around and going the back way through Wentzville over to Peine Rd...the emergency crews were just leaving the accident. Yes, I have seen tons and tons of accidents at this same place...on 61 in Lincoln county alot of intersection changes are being made...I hope some of these in St. Charles County on 61 will soon follow...it's just not very safe."
Michelle was a smart girl with many friends. A former classmate responded to the incident saying it was "very, very, sad. I used to go to school with her and she was very smart and kind. We will all miss" her. Then they added, "I also live on highway 61 now so I gotta pass that everyday. I better careful."
Another resident in the area commented, "I also have a teen driver who is 16 that attends school in St. Charles, Missouri. It is hard to let your teenager drive to school everyday just knowing one careless mistake can cause them their life. I just make sure to hug them every morning and tell them how much I love them. Then say a little prayer for God to keep them safe.
