Jon and Kate Plus 8 ran for five seasons and provided 116 episodes for Discovery and TLC. The premise of the show was simple: have camera crews follow around Jon and Kate plus 8 small children, as they go through daily life. What audiences watched, however, was the agonizingly slow deconstruction of a family caving under the pressure of child rearing, maintaining a personal relationship and being Jon and Kate Plus 8, TLC reality show participants.
While it may be difficult for John and Jane Doe American to envision the pressure of being Jon and Kate Plus 8, the fact that they reportedly got record ratings - THR refers to season five's premier episode as receiving the highest ratings ever -- is sure to have added ample strain. As the Jon and Kate Plus 8 final episode put the show to rest, it is anyone's guess on whom the media spotlight will rest next.
Jon and Kate Plus 8 Not the Only Reality Show Casualty
Hogan Knows Best had a four season, 43 episode run on VH1. It featured professional wrestler Hulk Hogan and his wife and kids. While audiences could only shake their heads at the drama involving family pets and zoning restrictions, the family disintegrated amidst teenage drinking, driving and a parental affair. Eventually it was cancelled.
Prior to that, the Anna Nicole Show chronicled two seasons (27 episodes) of Anna Nicole Smith's life on E! for all to see. It was mix of embarrassing footage and gut wrenching sadness, as the model struggled through her "fat years."

I am glad the show is over, Kate trying to milk TLC for all she can. Welcome to the real world, go out and find a job. I know the money is good but can't support your ass forever. Welfare might be the next source of income you can milk next. Good Luck!

It was never a relationship made in heaven. Reality is not an accurate term for these shows. Glad one more is done for. Now we only have 5 more years to hear about it. Unless one of them does something else stupid, then it all starts over. Feel sorry for the kiddos though.
At least TLC figured out that we don't want to watch the family fall apart any more.
There were other family reality shows that buckled under this pressure but it has been awhile. I just don't see how growing up with all that media attention could be positive for this family, especially given their particular personalities.

I will miss the show. I thought it was crap that tlc didn't want to continue the show, because of the seperation? What about all us fine ladies out there with a man that decides he would rather party with young women instead of being home & taking care of business. I was interested to see how Kate would maybe make us see that this is an all too common thing. But she is a good mom who will do what she has to do? Divorces happen, life goes on. I thought it would be interesting. Stupid Jon for having this called off. How is going to pay child support for 8 kids? I always loved how nice Kate & the Children were dressed & mannerly. Kate would have never had to be "Bossy" if she had a man who would stand up & take control, my God she has 8 kids.
