Giving Thanks Beyond the Dinner Table
Thanksgiving is almost here, and we are thinking about the turkey, pies, family, friends and all that we have to be grateful for this year. It has been a rough year for some, a good one for others, but no matter how difficult, there is always something to be thankful for. I am thankful for my family and friends, a wonderful husband, my pets, health, and that I am able to enjoy all my senses. There is plenty to go around.
Thanksgiving day remind us of the blessings we have, and despite some challenges this year, of all the things that went well. Unfortunately, once the day is gone, the turkey consumed, and the pies devoured, we go back to our routines and forget to be thankful day to day.
Being grateful is more than being thankful for what we have. It is being happy in our everyday lives despite the things we don't have. It is an attitude that we must welcome in our souls and learn to develop. It is receiving each new day with the peace of mind that we awakened and can enjoy one more day of life, with its good things and its challenges. We get the opportunity to help in someone's life, or do something mindfully. It is the realization, that no matter whom we are, or what we do; we leave an imprint on this planet. It is an attitude of humility in front of our Creator, of joy of being.
Each one of us is given the same 24 hours every day, and what we do with that time is up to us. How we decide to approach those hours is our decision to make. How we want to spend the time - prioritize - is ours to do as we choose. We can gratefully open our eyes in the morning and feel a sense of divine purpose or simple joy of living, or we can choose to be miserable and complain throughout the day. Up and down, happiness and suffering, all part of living, of existing. It is the way in which we choose to embrace those feelings and the facts of life that make a difference in our lives.
This Thanksgiving Day, let's be thankful for everything happening in our lives, for every person that surround us, for every experience that we can feel. Let's enjoy the celebration, the turkey, and all the company, but mostly let's make it a reminder of the attitude to keep for the rest of the year.
