Sherlock Holmes Top 10 Movies: Robert Downey Jr. Stars in New Sherlock Holmes
The Sherlock Holmes character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has delighted readers and movie viewers for decades. The original publication dates back to 1887, with 4 novels and 56 short stories by Doyle, but most of us baby boomer's became acquainted with the mysterious clue hound detective Sherlock Holmes through movies of the 1930's and 40's.
My top 10 Sherlock Holmes movies are from that period, the original classic episodes with Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Let's jump ahead first to the new movie with Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson.
The Sherlock Holmes movie trailer has been released and previews an action packed thriller with numerous aerobic fight scenes. Definitely different from the stoic episodes of yesteryear.
Here is my top 10 favorite Sherlock Holmes movies
10. Dressed to Kill--1946 Starring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce and Patricia Morison. Three musical boxes with codes embedded in song are pursued by a ruthless gang and Sherlock Holmes races to get the boxes before the criminals do. I love ruthless gangs and national security thrillers.
9. Terror by Night--1946 Starring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce and Dennis Hoey. Holmes solves a series of murders and recovers a stolen jewel on
a speeding train filled with potential suspects. Great when there is so many potential criminals to pick from.
8. The Pearl of Death--1944 Starring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce and Evelyn Ankers. The Borgia pearl is stolen from a royal museum by a master criminal and hidden in a bust of Napoleon. The only problem is there are six busts and each owner is being killed to find the bust with the pearl.
7. Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror--1942 Starring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce and Reginald Denny. Nazi saboteurs operating in Britain use a radio broadcast "The Voice of Terror" to broadcast their next activities. British Intelligence enlists the help of Holmes and Dr. Watson. Clever plot of using the radio to announce the crimes, I think it's a good suspense thriller.
