Donny Osmond Wins 'Dancing with the Stars' Season 9 Finale
Singer Donny Osmond and his partner Kym Johnson won the Season 9 finale of ABC's Dancing With the Stars last night. Osmond and Johnson beat out singer Mya and Kelly Osbourne to win the coveted DWTS mirror ball trophy.
Osmond, who at one point in the show sang his 1972 hit song Puppy Love, was a favorite among DWTS fans. The 52 year old former teen idol is the oldest winner ever on Dancing With the Stars. Previous winners include Drew Lachey, Brooke Burke and Shawn Jonson.
Osmond's win was a bit of a surprise, as singer Mya and her partner Dmitry Chaplin, were the highest scoring couple based on the judge's scores. But on Dancing With the Stars, as on most vote-in competition shows, the judges scores are only a piece of the picture. In addition to the judges scores, the audience vote accounts for a large chunk of the total vote tally. Osmond was a fan favorite all season long.
While judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli praised the nearly perfect performances of Mya and Dmitry, they had a special soft spot for wild child Kelly Osbourne. Osbourne was by far the most improved dancer of the season, going from awkward and unsure of herself to a graceful dancer by the end of the season. Osborne's parents, rocker Ozzy Osbourne and wife Sharon, were a constant fixture in the DWTS audience.
Donny Osmond was vocal about his intentions of winning DWTS, saying how badly he wanted it. During Monday night's DWTS performance episode, Osmond quipped, "I want to win this mirror ball so badly.... because if you had a sister named Marie and she was going to rub it in your face your whole life, you'd want to win, too."
Osmond was referring to his sister, Marie Osmond, who was a competitor on Season 5 of Dancing With the Stars. Marie Osmond finished in third place during her DWTS season (the winner of Season 5 was Indy 500 racer Hellio Castroneves). After Donny was crowned the winner of DWTS last night, he pulled his sister on to the stage to celebrate with him.
The eternally youthful Osmond has been married to wife Debbie since 1978 and has five grown sons and two grandchildren.
