Sherlock Holmes: Lives in Movies,Stories and Novels
Vincent Starrett said, "In a romantic chamber of the heart, in a nostalgic country of the mind, where it its always 1895" is where the stories and characters of Conan Doyle exist. Conan Doyle brought Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, their adventures and their lives to life to many.
Now in the movie "Sherlock Holmes", brought to the theaters by Warner Brothers Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, we see the character of Sherlock Holmes portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in a new, more reality oriented, visceral dimension.
Through his extraordinary quality of storytelling Conan Doyle brought his character, Sherlock Holmes, to life; many people refused to believe that Sherlock Holmes was not a living, breathing individual. Now, through this movie starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes, the character comes to us in an even more believable characterization.
In my opinion, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson always came to us on an intellectual level; their relationship was one of sharing the observations, deductions, and facts of the case. Holmes was the one who finally cut through the facts, with his keen insight, to come up with the correct solution; all in the name of justice, fairness and moral obligation. This was always brought to us on screen through very correct, very stable, gentlemen, entering into these adventures with a most intellectual process. Although they were actively involved, through their conversations, onscreen it seemed that the actual physical involvement in the investigation was always left to the imagination. Even the relationship between Holmes and Watson was very weak in it's portrayal. This movie serves to bring this more physical aspect to us; we see Holmes and Watson as real people, arguing, laughing, sharing facts, acting as real individuals would and we also see Holmes actively involved in the physical investigation Holmes becomes more action oriented, and we see him throw himself into the physical investigation as well as the thought process.
