Twelve-years ago when I graduated high school I was given, as a graduation gift, the book Life on the Edge: A Young Adults Guide to a Meaningful Future by Dr. James Dobson. This was my first "adult" book and
the first book I completely read because I wanted to and not because it was a school assignment. At that point in my journey it was relevant and caused me to think about issues I hadn't given a second thought to before.
A few years after that I began to grow leery of Dobson after he went before the Republican leadership and threatened them with pulling the vote of the Christian right if they didn't pay more attention to their issues. I felt this to be a grotesque display of power and feared that Dobson was slipping from atop his ministry of Focus on the Family into the power game of American politics. It's one thing to be a concerned and active citizen, it's quite another to seek out and exploit power in an attempt to push your issues.
Once again Dobson has crossed the line and shown to the Nation the corruption that comes with power. This time he has chosen to attack a fellow brother in Christ, the Rev. Richard Cizik from the National Associate of Evangelicals. Dobson, along with others, are attempting to have Cizik removed from the NEA, an organization in which Dobson is not even a part of, because of Cizik's outspokenness concerning global warming. Displaying more integrity than those Christian leaders who line up with Dobson, chairman of the NEA board L. Roy Taylor is not caving to this modern day witch hunt.
Why are people like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell & Pat Robertson so fearful of an evangelical that is concerned about the environment? You would think there might be this intelligent theological explanation. Well, the explanation is neither intelligent or theological, it's simply a desire to retain power. These men believe there are only two issues that Evangelicals should be concerned with: abortion and same-sex marriage. The continued short-sightedness of these men requires that Evangelicals across this Nation stand up and say that Dobson and Company no longer speak for them.
