Alice's Restaurant - Where is Alice, Arlo Guthrie and Officer Obey Today? Not Much Has Changed for "Alices Restaurant People

You Can Get Anything You Want at Alice's Restaurant. Alice's Restaurant, a Thanksgiving Tradition for Baby Boomers

Oh, Alice's Restaurant! Thanksgiving would not be the same without this movie. Arlo Guthrie wrote the song," Alice's Restaurant", after a true story that happened to him and his friends. The movie really gives you a realistic look at the culture in the 60's. Living near the area where all of the festivities, heartbreaks and joys of Alice's Restaurant took place has made this movie and song even more of a favorite of mine. (For those who have not seen the movie or heard of the song, go to the last section for description).

Alice did open a restaurant and she was really a good cook. Alice's Restaurant was located in what is now, Theresa's Stockbridge Cafe. The real name of the restaurant at the time was "The Back Door", but Arlo Guthrie named it "Alice's Restaurant" in his song. The owner of the Restaurant was Alice Brock, hence the title of Guthrie's song.

Stockbridge Massachusetts is also known for Norman Rockwell, but for the flower children of the peace and love years, it is a reminder to the ideals that they held closely in those days. "Alice's Restaurant" was located down a back alley at 40 Main Street, Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Main Street Café is the business that sits in front of the location today. (For all you sight seeing folks).

The town of Stockbridge is magical, not because it holds the history of a New England restaurant that was set up by a bunch of hippies, but because of the landscape. You step back in time when you visit this area.

In the movie, "Alice's Restaurant", Alice and her husband, Ray, fix up an old church that becomes a place for drop in communal living for a group of "hippies". This is what happened in real life too. The church is still there today and now has a famous owner.

The church is in Great Barrington Massachusetts, a town over from Stockbridge, about six miles away. This is also a true part of the story - the famous Thanksgiving dinner from the movie and the song, "Alice's Restaurant", was actually held there.

Today the church is the Guthrie Center, owned by Arlo Guthrie, who purchased the church in 1991. The church is located at 4 Van Deusenville Road, Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
