What are my choices for the Top 10 futuristic action movies? Putting together any Top 10 list is an exercise in personal choice. What should one use as a basis for comparison? What criteria are important? Should something be added or left off, and why? This assignment was given to me asking me to write a Top 10 list of the best futuristic action movies.
Being a big fan of movies, and futuristic action movies in particular, I jumped at the opportunity to write this list. Then the real work began. There are so many good movies out there that deserve to make the cut. In the age of ultra realistic special effects and computer generated graphics, it seems that every year a new movie comes out that belongs on this list.
Take this year's new Star Trek movie for example. I am not a big fan of the television show and haven't even seen all of the older movies. Yet I found myself in the theater opening weekend to catch the new one. Why? It looked simply amazing in the trailers and I HAD to go.
A new movie coming out on 12-18-09 has caught my interest already. I am sure I will be there opening weekend for it. It is director James Cameron's new futuristic action movie named Avatar. James Cameron brought us Aliens, The Abyss, and The Terminator; showing that he knows this genre. Avatar promises futuristic humans with advanced technology versus guerilla style fighting blue aliens. Mega budget action movie at its best. I can't wait to see it.
Back to my Top 10 futuristic action movies. Before I give my picks, I want to clarify my thought process for making my list. First thing is that I had to have actually watched the movie. Second thing is I had to remember a scene or line from the movie, showing that I really liked it. And lastly (I noticed this as I started jotting down titles to consider) most of the movies were made before computer generated special effects were the norm. A few newer movies made the list because they were so good, but most are from a different school of movie making. Keep in mind I was born in 1978 so most of these movies I saw growing up. A couple of them were already out, but most I remember being new movies at the time. So here goes...
