Why Demon Movies Scare the Heck Out of Us

Demon movies are considered by many to be some of the scariest movies of all time. Movies like, The Omen, and The Exorcist will be listed as some of the scariest of all time for many years. What is about these movies that scare us so much?

Christianity has spent 2000 years not only trying to prove the existence of God and Jesus, but also of the existence of Satan and all of his minions. Christianity has spent this time trying to convince people that the Devil and all of his cohorts are real, and have a profound effect on our daily lives.

Most people believe in the existence of a positive afterlife. Many are unsure if there is any actuality behind the claims of their religious leaders as to the existence of a negative area that our souls may go to after we die.

Demon movies make an effort to answer this ideological question. The demons that are portrayed in these movies are as bad, if not worse, then those that have been mentioned and alluded to in sermons for almost two millennia.

It is this possible reality that scares many people when they watch a demon movie. The movie calls into question a personal ideology that is based off of what was taught from childhood about good and evil in religion. It is this religious statement that many cannot bare to watch.

It is the possibility that not only are demons real, but that demons may also play a significant role in our lives. It is a statement that demons can take hold of a person and devour their free will.

Free will is one of the cornerstones of Christianity. Any reduction of free will is considered to be against God. Any statement against the will of, or power of, God is something that will send shivers up many people's spines.

The idea that there is a force in the universe that could take what many consider to be a great gift from God away is a horror that the demon movies exploit. The thought that any force other then God could be ultimately powerful scares the foundation of many people's religious beliefs.
