You would think that being a first team All-American would have afforded Cajun Cain a little more respect down in West Virginia than he got at the Night of Stars race on May 12th, but in greyhound racing you are only as good as your last six lines it seems. Perhaps that is why Cajun Cain, winner of the Derby Lane Sprint Classic in 2006 and a Night of Stars race last November, went off at odds of 4-1 at Tri-State Greyhound Park in the sixth race of the 19th Night of Stars program. Some of the proceeds from this nationally simulcasted event, which features sixteen races from sixteen different venues from around the country, goes to aid greyhound adoption efforts. Cajun Cain, who was in the three hole, found himself the fourth betting favorite when the box opened, but in front at the finish line, where it really means something.

This Night of Stars race was arguably the most balanced and evenly matched field of the evening, and the final odds reflected this. Those wagering on the event across America were hard pressed to settle on one dog as the standout here, making a trio of Tri-State racers 3-1. BD's Haji in the two box, Craigie Plush in the seven, and K Angel Rascal in the eight were all thought better of than Cajun Cain, who had the last laugh. Of those three, Craigie Plush had easily the best record at the West Virginia oval this season, winning sixteen of his twenty-four times to post. But he was buried in an awful spot, between two speedy breakers in Hallo Boston Ted in the six and Angel Rascal on the outside, and when he failed to fire he was doomed for a middle of the pack finish.
