Glen Campbell at the Brisbane Convention Centre - Saturday, 28 November 2009

When I heard Glen Campbell was coming to Brisbane for one concert, I quickly organized tickets for our family (my Mum, aged 90, my brother and his teenage son and daughter - and me of course).

The last time I saw Glen perform was in 1975 at Brisbane's then famous Festival Hall. This venue no longer exists - a victim of central business district development. Concert goers will remember many international acts such as The Temptations,The Bee Gees, Cliff Richard and the Shadows doing shows at this iconic concert venue. Coincidentally, Cliff Richard is touring Australia soon and The Temptations will also be in town for The Motown Event.

Tonight's performance at the Brisbane Convention Centre showed Glen's talent is timeless. At 73 years of age, he got out on the stage and sang song after song for 2 hours. A lot of his numbers featured a guitar solo segment that demonstrated his musical gift to perfection. He is, after all, one of the world's best guitar players.

He opened the show with King of the Road and swung into Gentle on my Mind and Galveston. The audience were enthralled from the first moment he opened his mouth to sing. The next three songs were Try a Little Kindness, By the Time I Get to Phoenix and Country Boy followed by the Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds' 1971 hit Don't Pull Your Love.

Glen displays an easy charm and genuine affection for his audience. In a brief break he mentioned he and his family had been in Brisbane all week. This had enabled them to do some sightseeing around Brisbane and visit the Gold Coast. What could be better at 73 than combining performing and travel?

The band of musicians showed fantastic musical ability and they provided pleasing back-up vocals. I particularly liked hearing Dreams of the Everyday Housewife again and Glen's powerful rendition of George Jones' She Thinks I Still Care. The theme song from True Grit sent the audience into a frenzy as did Glen's vocal gymnastics when he sang the Hank Williams classic Lovesick Blues. The set ended with Glen playing Mason Williams's Classical Gas.
