Children are suppose to be protected from people that would cause them any harm. What if the person causing the harm to the child are their own family? What if the child was being abused and not properly cared for on a daily basis? Most would think that someone would step in and make sure the child was removed from the situation. What if the justice system fails the child and they are left to be neglected and abused? How is this going to encourage others to report child abuse? We are all told to do our part and report suspected child abuse, but so often the reports are overlooked and nothing is done to protect the innocent child. What becomes of a child that suffered abuse? Are these abused children the ones that decide they have had enough, and murder there abusers? Maybe child abuse and neglect contribute to teenagers that bring guns to school and shoot other innocent children.

There needs to be changes made to a system that allows a child to stay in a home where they are neglected and abused. Too many times the reports are not checked into as thoroughly as needed. Children are slipping through the system and remaining victims of child abuse. One case that recently slipped through is the story of a nine year old girl. She has been moved from state to state with her mother. Her mother does not provide the supervision a child requires. She is too concerned with finding a boyfriend to worry about her troubled child. The mother will leave for weeks at a time with different men while the girl is left with her relatives.

great article. I agree, there needs to be a change in the system. there are too many baby snatchers in CPS who rip apart innocent families and yet they seem to ignore those who really need them.

If anyone wants some valid insight into the child protection industry read: This is Child Protection? By Gregory A. Hession, J.D. This article is probably the most accurate article I have read exposing the secretive world of CPS. Ever wonder why the juvenile/family courts are not open to the public, know you will know! State CPS regulations are just for show.

While I agree with the majority of the comments, I firmly believe that the real reason why CPS and the incompetent justice system does not work is because of the perverse financial incentive awarded to the states by the federal govt. A system the rewards gross incompetence and corruption. Check out the CAPTA and ASFA acts. The ASFA act actually rewards potential "child saviors" with financial gain when the "protected" child is adopted out. Pretty sick if you ask me. Take away the funding, the states will have to cut their budgets and privatize and the problem might fix itself. Throwing more money at a broken system is never the answer and it broke over 30 years ago when the green started flowing.

Jamie is right...people who have done nothing are often harrassed by CPS while the ones who are seriously endangering their kids are ignored.

Great ARtticle. It seems parents who care for their children and love them are the ones who get harrassed while those who abuse their children are ignored by Child Services until something really horrible happens.

Maybe we need to start bombarding our elected officials to budget more money for child welfare and less for political fundraisers.

Great article, one that touches me dearly, especially now when we are trying to adopt. What I have found out about the system. The social workers are overworked. They are doing one, two and even three jobs. As they are taking calls, they are also doing reports, talking to other families, etc. There are not enough social workers and who are getting hurt the children. Sometimes people won't make the call, they won't tell when they see a child being hurt or neglected. Other times, the call is made and when the social worker finally does come out, things looks okay, for that moment. It is sad, sad sad. More home checks, need to be made. These home checks need to be made without schedule. The social workers need to show up at all hours and not call ahead. The government needs to find the money and hire more social workers. Plus, more people need to speak out. Thank you for making people think.

The system stinks in most states. It's either way too far to one side or the other; never balanced. I'd rather they err in favor of the children.

It amazes me how much is NOT done about child abuse cases. You'd think there would be people to step in and help, but with such a broken system, I don't think there are. Great article.

It seems that child services just doesn't worry about hard cases, where parents and children move around a lot, but stay on the trail of easy cases like bloodhounds. In one case I know, a 6-month baby was losing weight because he couldn't keep down formula, any formula. The mother, in desperation, put him on cow's milk; he kept it down. The doctor wrote notes for daycare that yes, this baby needed cow's milk -- and they still reported it to child services. You know, this mother -- who was and is fantastic -- was followed for a year and a half? Yet you hear about these terrible, terrible cases of abuse all the time. Something is wrong with this sort of system.

I do agree that there has to be more rigorous investigation when it comes to cases of suspected child abuse.

This is an excellent article! The system has gotten somewhat better since I was a child, but not much better. As a toddler, I was left at friends' homes, left alone at home with my year older sister, and we were beaten. The police were called hundreds of times, but they claimed we did not have enough bruises. How many bruises do children need?! Thanks for writing this much needed article!
